Two car-and-passenger-ferry services connect Long Island with Connecticut. The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry runs between Port Jefferson, on the North Shore of Long Island, and the town of Bridgeport in southwestern Connecticut; the ride takes 1¼ hours. Cross Sound Ferry runs between Orient Point, at the northeastern tip of Long Island, and New London in southeastern Connecticut; this trip also takes 1¼ hours. In addition, Cross Sound Ferry offers high-speed passenger-ferry service (no vehicles) between Orient Point and New London; the ride takes 40 minutes. All ferries run year-round.

There's also extensive ferry service within New York City, including the famous and free Staten Island Ferry. The 25-minute ride between lower Manhattan and Staten Island affords spectacular views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Ferry reservations are strongly recommended, particularly in summer, and in some cases they are required for automobiles. Fares are about $17 for pedestrians and $51 for cars on the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry, and $14 for pedestrians and $46 for cars on the Cross Sound Ferry. Both ferries run about a dozen times daily. There's no charge to ride the Staten Island Ferry, which runs 24 hours.
